The hospital, particularly ICU, is a frightening experience. My husband, 85, the patient, had always been on the “other side” of the picture as he had been a pastor for 68 years helping with one’s spiritual needs and doing a great job. After experiencing a physical decline for the past 2 years, it culminated in this sudden hospital experience. This was bad enough with many tests, discouraging words of advice, etc., but suddenly in the middle of the night, he was transferred to ICU. His situation had quickly deteriorated to critical and required ICU and we awoke to this news. This is what news awaited us at the hospital. Belia was his nurse from the beginning of her attendance to the end, she so efficiently “took charge,” immediately got the night nurse to explain to my daughter his immediate situation which Belia (the new night nurse) had not had time to assess in the change of shift, she does everything quickly and efficiently. She is a smart person and answers each question with intelligence, authority, and knowledge. She is a happy person who uses her nice personality to give one peace and comfort about the question or situation but does it with truth and authority. She was attentive to the patient and his needs. She answered my questions and tried to supply my requests and my husband’s needs in the best way possible. She never complained as family members arrived to see their Dad and Grand Dad. She made us feel comfortable and welcomed as we visited our husband, Dad, and Granddad. She is an Extraordinary Nurse!
