He showed empathy to a four-year-old who was traumatized from his first trip to the ER, exhausted, and in pain.
My son just turned four years old and was sick all week the week of his birthday. With blisters on his tongue a lot of discomfort and several days of fevers and dehydration we ended up in the emergency room. After several hours in the ER, we were admitted to the pediatric unit late into the night. C had been inconsolable for hours and just wasn't himself.
As soon as we made it to the peds unit though everything changed. "Mr. Ben" greeted us immediately and introduced himself with a kind and quirky smile. When he became our nurse he instantly made a connection with C. He was able to calm him make him smile and make him laugh within just a few minutes. Mr. Ben found a beanie baby that matched his pajamas and noticed C just had a birthday. He offered snacks and drinks for my older son and me without us even asking. He showed empathy to a four-year-old who was traumatized from his first trip to the ER, exhausted, and in pain. He made sure that all three of us were comfortable before leaving our room to let us rest.
Mr. Ben is an excellent nurse who truly made us feel like we were the only family in his care but as a nurse myself I know he was probably very busy. The whole team in the pediatric unit was kind welcoming and caring.
The whole experience was exceptional and our nurse Mr. Ben was the shining star. I didn't tell him I was a nurse and I think that proves that he treats every family with the same amount of care no matter who they are. C is still talking about him days later and he is feeling much better too. I just can't say enough great things about our nurse that night. Thank you, Ben! You took a scared exhausted stressed family into your care and you made everything okay again.
