My son A was flown to ECU Children's Hospital from Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital. He was in a critical condition with major concerns for his airway, which resulted in his paralysis and pain. The entire PICU staff was wonderful in every way, but Ben, in particular, is a very special nurse for us. Even though A couldn't speak or move, Ben spoke to him often, telling jokes, giving compliments, and encouraging without ceasing. He himself, being very in touch with his inner child, made it a mission to ensure my son had a toy to hold on to, a fun-designed blanket, and even went out of his way to have Star Wars bed sheets. Ben became his friend without delay. Also, just as importantly, my wife and I had this feeling of lack of control over the entire situation. Ben briefed us on every intricate detail, making us feel like we were in control. As a parent, this was phenomenally profound. Ben didn't only treat A; he also treated my wife and me with compassion, an incredible love I've only ever experienced a few times in my life. Ben's a phenomenal nurse and embodies the virtues of what it means to be a medical professional.
