Ben’s willingness to listen and communicate his findings to other staff made a considerable change in my father's care.
Each employee provided good care to my father, during his admission and hospital stay, in early 2024. We are grateful. It would be difficult to name one person who stands out amongst these individuals. However, Ben outshines with his skill set. He performs well above his peers and is deserving of any additional professional recognition granted to him.
In this instance, Ben employed his gift for listening and is the SOLE care provider who immediately understood my father's pain; its location and its history (or in this case, lack of history). Ben asked specific questions and actively listened to the responses to understand current pain levels, such as when the pain first appeared, where it was located, its lack of history prior to hospitalization, and the effectiveness of treatment so that adjustments could be made. Ben’s willingness to listen and communicate his findings to other staff made a considerable change in my father's care.
Other staff, including the doctors, asked similar questions but inserted their own assumptions into their conclusions, which were contrary to what my father had told them. These miscommunications started to produce a lack of confidence in my father. He began feeling frustrated with his care and we saw a decline in his demeanor. Ben was able to align with my father, at my father's level and build that confidence again. We immediately saw an extra effort from my father to get moving and get healthy again.
Dad is doing well today. His pain is gone, and he continues to walk every day, hoping to get back to his pre-hospitalization activity levels. We appreciate everyone's skilled care and efforts, and we are markedly impressed with Ben's.
