I have worked alongside of Benita McCann for 11 years and have witnessed countless moments of selflessness and compassion. Benita without fail has given the best care possible to every patient she has ever taken care of. She advocates for each patient, every day. She is very knowledgeable and works well with the physician staff to develop an educated and appropriate plan of care.
Benita spends hours with her patients' families educating them on diagnosis, treatment, and expected outcomes. She develops a trusting relationship with the family members and sends them home many nights with peace of mind. The care she provides for both the patients and families leaves a long lasting impact. Many times the patients and families have returned to our SICU to thank her and show her the progress they have made after discharge.
Benita shows empathy to her patients and family at all times, especially in their darkest hours. Many times this incredible nurse leaves her shift with a heavy heart and takes it home with her. She talks to her peers and to the physicians to review other possibilities leaving no stone unturned, hoping for the best possible outcomes.
Benita's knowledge base and strong work ethic leave an impact on all of us. Many times I wonder what I could do to improve as a nurse and to be as well rounded as she is. Benita's ethics, values, and genuine sincerity are well received by all of the staff and never go unnoticed.
She is the unsung hero of the SICU. She not only cares for patients and families, but for her coworkers as well. Her hard work and dedication were exemplified during a recent snowstorm. She cared for her patients, and also cared about staff and called them to see how we were doing. Asking how we were, how our families were and if we were all safe during the storm. This wonderful human being does this unconditionally, asking for nothing in return. Benita is an excellent nurse and a wonderful woman with a heart of gold.
