As a long time sitter, often in the ER, I have watched Ben deal with a variety of patients. A stand out is a little girl, 5 or 6 years old, who needed stitches. Ben got down on one knee telling her exactly what needed to be done, and that he wouldn’t lie to her, it would hurt just a little bit. After it was done, with only a few tears, he verified with her that it only hurt a little bit. Another night, it was a hysterical young adult. When he returned to the desk, I asked, “Are you part psychiatrist?” He said you just have to be honest with everyone. When it’s someone being difficult, or abusive to staff, again Ben is honest about what he will follow if the behavior does not stop. Ben takes as much time as it requires, in addition to being an excellent, capable, caring nurse.
