Miss Brown was walking with me (Dr. G), when a code blue was called on a patient down the hall. We both went into the room. Things were a bit chaotic. The patient’s wife was standing outside the doorway sobbing. Multiple medical personnel walked past the wife in a hurry to help inside the dying man’s room.
Without hesitating, Bernadette took a chair, had the wife sit in it, held her hand and comforted her. She quickly directed other medical personnel to look in the room and to come and update the wife. She comforted the wife and family until they were ready to move the patient to ICU. Ms. Brown made sure the patient’s wife was able to find all her personal belongings and walked down the hall with her to stay close to her husband.
Ms. Brown showed compassion, love, concern, even when this was not a patient/family she was involved with.
