Bessy just had that extra something that put you at ease with the way she handled everything for us.
The extraordinary nurse we would like to nominate for a DAISY Award is nurse Bessy, who was one of the many nurses who took care of our mom while she was on HOAG 5 for almost a month before she passed away. After being there day after day with our mom as she began to decline, Bessy was always encouraging to us. While being a nurse is her occupation, and she did it well, it was her compassion that shone through to us each day she was Mom's nurse. Towards the end, we began to realize that Mom's days were numbered, and Bessy continued to guide us through what was going to happen to Mom before it did. This helped us tremendously since previously we had only lost our dad, and that was during COVID, and we had never experienced seeing him in his last days before he passed.

When it became apparent that Mom would be put in a community hospice, Bessy asked if anyone had told us about a stone heart that could be given to hospice patients before they passed. We had never heard of it. She asked if we would like to receive one, and she took the time to get the heart, bring it to our mom, and place it in her hand. We took a picture, said a prayer, and placed it back in the velvet pouch.

Bessy called one morning and said that when she came on shift, she could tell our mom was in pain and notified the doctor and mom was put on a fentanyl drip as we were in the middle of calling nursing homes, it was Bessy who informed us that mom may now be qualified for inpatient hospice care and that the hospital had one on the premises. We asked her how we could get in contact with them, and she said it would be up to the doctor on the floor, whom we met with when we got to the hospital that day. In the end, Mom was able to stay right in NYU Langone Hospital's hospice until she passed. Bessy was again her nurse that day, who moved her across the hall to a private room and made sure she was comfortable, and more importantly, we were comfortable and fully understood what our mom was going through.

As my brother and I know, this is only a nomination for a DAISY Award, but in our eyes, she already won. We would call my mom a frequent flyer to the hospital ER and different admissions in her last years, and while all her care has been good, Bessy just had that extra something that put you at ease with the way she handled everything for us. We are sure she has many patients each day she works, and we are sure others would agree that she is a good nurse.

We feel it is important for NYU Langone to know what they have in nurse Bessy. She just seemed to go that extra step to make sure not only her patient, but their families were informed and made to feel at ease for everything that was going on. We believe the highest compliment we can pay to the hospital is letting you know what a great employee you have in nurse Bessy, and that, as far as we are concerned, she became a part of our family, and we will never forget her, along with her compassion.
