Because of her, the patient was able to get the medication in a timely fashion and go home over the weekend rather than spending an extra 2-3 days in the hospital.
Beth is an outstanding colleague who consistently goes above and beyond the requirements of her job to help patients and support staff. During my first weekend as an attending, she worked over the weekend to help a patient with a new diagnosis of epileptic spasms obtain vigabatrin by working with the insurance company and helping me during my first time through the process. Because of her, the patient was able to get the medication in a timely fashion and go home over the weekend rather than spending an extra 2-3 days in the hospital. More recently, she effected nationwide change that will help many patients beyond our hospital by simplifying the appeal process for this medication, which is first line treatment for children with epileptic spasms. Every day, she consistently provides excellent communication and ensures that patients have what they need. She is a blessing to the patients and staff she serves. I'm very thankful to have her as a colleague.

I want to recognize Beth Shephard, a Neurology Nurse Coordinator, for her outstanding work and commitment to our patients. Beth recently tackled a complex issue involving medication coverage for two of our patients-a process that took over two months to resolve! Driven by her curiosity and dedication, Beth took the initiative to contact the manufacturer and drug representative directly to highlight the barriers she faced during the appeal process and advocate for a change. Her escalation and advocacy led to a nationwide change in the qualification criteria for the "Panther Promise of Support Free Drug Program" sponsored by Upsher-Smith. This process change and update will not only benefit our patients but also help countless others across the country gain access to the medications they need. Beth's persistence, communication, and patient-first mindset were instrumental in making this change happen. Thank you, Beth, for being a true champion for our patients and for setting an incredible example of compassionate, proactive nursing!
