Beth was basically leading the response and continued to massage and remove clots until the ED arrived.
Beth was caring for a 5-day-old patient admitted with hyperbili whose mother was also staying in the room. When she was drawing the morning bili level, the mother made a comment about her pants feeling wet. Beth asked her if she was bleeding and if she was having clots, then helped the mother to the bathroom. The mother was unable to pee, and Beth saw the clots. Beth instructed the mother to get back in bed and assisted her. Beth then called out to get a second RN for help. The RN arrived, expecting Beth to need help with the heel stick, and walked in and saw the clots on the floor. Beth was providing fundal massage and removing clots--of note, Beth is experienced as an L&D RN as well. The second RN got the supplies Beth asked for and called a RRT. Beth was basically leading the response and continued to massage and remove clots until the ED arrived. The second RN and SL were on standby to assist and watched Beth's other patients. The mother was transported to VUH and rushed to emergency surgery to control her bleeding. Beth's quick decisions and escalation of care likely saved this situation from resulting in a devastating outcome for the mother.
