Beth is both a strong patient and fierce nursing advocate. She makes sure that her nurses have the support needed to deliver the highest quality of patient care. The kind of care she gave at the bedside 30 years ago. Beth has given a lifetime to nursing and exemplifies the very best of the profession.
Beth has been dedicated to VCU Health for more than 34 years and the compassionate care of others. During this time, Beth has mentored countless team members, earning a high level of respect throughout the organization. Beth puts the team first which contributes to the long tenure of many nurses within her department.
In the words of one of her peers, “Beth is compassionate about helping her team be their best. She has a genuine interest in their satisfaction at work. She rounds throughout the units. She sees potential in her nurses that they may not see in themselves, and she helps them to become enthusiastic about their growth and find new ways to become engaged and involved.”
Another peer noted, “Beth demonstrates what I think a leader should be. She is caring and knows how to build relationships, but also knows how to be firm when needed. She isn't quick to jump to assumptions and always gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. She can think outside of the box and come up with solutions to problems. VCUHS is lucky to have her, and I am lucky to have worked with (and learned from) such an incredible leader. Beth is a dynamic Nurse Manager and leader in Supplemental Staffing. She is an excellent mentor and coach to all the nurses and team members she encounters.”
In addition to these lifetime contributions, Beth has also promoted a positive image of nursing that extends to our patients and community. She led two departmental fundraisers to support cancer patients and their families. One fundraiser was established in memory of a nurse’s niece who had passed away. Beth organized the collection of toys that would be donated to the Peds Oncology Clinic toy closet. Another fundraiser she organized raised money to assist Massey volunteers in providing food to patients.
It is evident Beth serves as a beacon of inspiration to those who have had the fortunate opportunity to work alongside, be mentored or coached by her.
One nurse shared, "Beth is both a strong patient and fierce nursing advocate. She makes sure that her nurses have the support needed to deliver the highest quality of patient care. Another stated, "I am the nurse I am today because of her influence, her guidance, and the incredible nurse that she is. I am currently a masters-prepared, Board-Certified Clinical Nurse V. While I am proud of these accomplishments, I often reflect on Beth’s influence on my life in small and big ways. I recognize that my greatest gift and reward has been to practice and learn beside this phenomenal nurse. She shares my passion for nursing and has always taken the time to hold my hand, pull and push me at times, and always showed me that she was, above all else, my friend. There is nobody who deserves the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award more than her. She is one in a million."
