I’m a fellow nurse who works in the surgical unit at WellSpan York Hospital. Meeting Beth was unexpected and honestly tragic. ​

One Thursday in July, I was so excited to have my second ultrasound of our baby. This was my first pregnancy, and although not planned, my husband and I were so excited to become parents. We went to our appointment and started with the ultrasound. Things quickly changed when no heartbeat could be found. I went numb and shut down. The next thing I knew, we were discussing the best options for miscarriage. ​

The next day, I met Beth in the short-stay unit. Beth was warm, caring, and loving from the start. I was scheduled to have a D&C and I was scared. I requested one more scan be done before going to the OR. Beth arranged everything for me to have a confirming ultrasound. Beth held my hand and comforted me. Once returning from the OR and PACU, Beth continued to go above and beyond in her care. She spent time talking with me. She encouraged me. It was like having an old friend as my nurse. She made me feel safe and assured me that I would be okay. Beth exceeded expectations by a mile. ​

Then, a week later, my husband and I received a beautiful card from Beth. I was surprised and not at the same time because Beth is one of those nurses. This is not her job; this is her calling. Thank you, Beth!​
