A patient came into the PACU and was assigned to Beth Smiley, RN. Beth was given report by the OR circulator and the CRNA. Within 3 minutes, Beth assessed that the patient was not moving her chest even though her oxygen saturation was normal. Upon further assessment by listening to her chest, Beth asked for an anesthesia assistant because she could not hear any air movement. She obtained an Ambu bag and began to assist with respiration. Once help arrived, it was determined that the patient required medication to reverse the effects of anesthesia. Once the medication was given, the patient was able to move and breathe on her own.
When you talk to Beth, she would say she was only doing her job, but in reality, her ability to quickly assess this situation and react appropriately proved to be a true-life saving measure. She is an exceptional nurse in the PACU, and she treats every patient with the same high-quality care. She is a true patient advocate, especially for patients just coming out of anesthesia. Beth is an outstanding role model and her excellent clinical skills proved to be a life-saving measure for this patient on this day.
