We spent a night on ward 16 with my son after he had emergency surgery. Beth looked after us, and she was incredible with him.

My son is 12 and is autistic; he can find being in hospital challenging. She was respectful and communicated amazingly with him; he was informed and involved in his care and treatment.

He was struggling with sensory issues of compression dressing post-surgery; this was really distressing him, and Beth was amazing.

She always spoke to him first, in an appropriate way for him to understand. She was kind and compassionate and tried hard to find an alternative for him, as she could see he wasn’t coping. She made sure he was more comfortable and still tried to find an alternative. This meant he was more comfortable and calmer.

She had such a lovely nature and a way with all the children. My son asked me to get her some biscuits to say thank you, and in his own words he said, "Mum, she has been amazing and has made such a difference to our stay"- and he is right, she did.

Beth could also see that I wasn’t feeling great and took the time to see if she could help, as I’m experiencing my own medical issues. She checked on me throughout our stay and reassured me that if I needed to see a doctor, she would help to arrange this.

Thank you, Beth, for looking after us; you are made to be a children’s nurse and made such a difference to our stay.
