She didn’t leave. She held my hand, she held me, and she sat with me in that darkness, making me feel safe when nothing else could.
There are no words that can fully express the depth of gratitude I have for Beth Russell, but I want to try — because she truly deserves to be recognised in the most meaningful way.
Beth was by my side during the most devastating moment of my life. I was told, just before delivering my beautiful daughter, that she had passed away. The pain, the disbelief, and the heartbreak were earth-shattering. I remember screaming, sobbing, completely crumbling. Beth stayed right there with me. She didn’t leave. She held my hand, she held me, and she sat with me in that darkness, making me feel safe when nothing else could.
Beth’s care went far beyond medical support. She also supported my partner, with patience, kindness, and so much compassion, making sure neither of us ever felt alone. In the hours that followed, Beth helped us bathe our daughter. She guided us through that sacred moment with such gentleness and respect, allowing us to parent our daughter in the only way we could. It is a memory we will carry in our hearts forever.
I also nearly lost my life that day due to a severe haemorrhage and required emergency transfusions. I was fighting for my life while grieving my daughter. Beth stayed with me throughout, making me feel safe, protected, and held. Her care continued in the weeks that followed. She made sure we were still seen, still supported, and that our daughter was still remembered.
Beth is the “Miss Honey” of midwives - soft, nurturing, endlessly patient, and full of a rare, beautiful kindness. She changed me, and she will always hold a place in our hearts.
