Bethany Seidel and I were working together in a pod and her display of compassion and care for her patient left a lasting impression on me. Her patient was on ECMO following surgery and the outlook was not very good. While the medical and surgical teams were both focused on trying to address changes in the patient's condition, Bethany was able to see the full picture more clearly. She advocated strongly to the surgeon and the attending that the patient be comfortable and not endure pain during what was likely the end of her life. Bethany made sure the baby was clean and presentable, insisting that she needed a cute bow in her hair at all times. Her patient had the love and care a baby would normally receive from her family but could not given her condition. That week turned out to be the baby's last, but my heart is still full knowing that she was so well cared for and did not suffer thanks to this exceptional nurse. The CICU is lucky to have a nurse like Bethany back and I hope she stays for many years to come.
