I received a call from my good friend that her beautiful, smart and beloved son had passed away. My friend recently received a copy of her son's chart and we went though it together (I am an ICU nurse). Each of us looking at it from our own points of view.
We both wanted to write to say thank you for what you did for him. As I looked at the chart, I could only imagine what you all went through. I saw that CPR went on for over an hour. I realize how incredibly exhausting, emotionally and physically, that would have been. I also noticed this all went on between 0600-0730 on a Saturday morning. I am sure your Friday night was busy, and I know you were all already thinking about leaving when you got this call, but I also know no one hesitated for a second to jump in and give this young man every chance you could give him. I'm sure the oncoming shift, maybe not even ready for work, let alone a code, jumped right in too.
We take some comfort from knowing professionals like you gave him every chance at survival. We hope that knowing this, gives you the strength to continue the work that you do.
