In the short amount of time I have known Betsy, she has taught me more than any teacher I've ever had. Betsy approaches precepting with a no-nonsense attitude, but gently corrects any errors I make or misconceptions I have. She continually quizzes my knowledge and drills information until she is satisfied it will not leave me. I have seen both new and seasoned nurses look to Betsy for advice and information. If on a rare occasion Betsy does not have an answer or know where to find one on the unit, she will research the topic herself, always using the most reliable academic sources. Betsy's knowledge is matched by her extraordinary skill with seemingly every area of nursing. Whether it's hitting a sneaky vein, or finding a playful baby on the monitor, I have never seen Betsy unsuccessful in her endeavors. In my orientation, I am consistently challenged to push past my comfort zone to develop my skills. Betsy always includes me, making a preemptive game plan, so the shift and delivery run smoothly, and I feel more comfortable and confident giving care independently. She coaches me when I doubt my own abilities, giving me faith in myself and enthusiasm for new and exciting tasks. I always feel like I have a strong safety net with Betsy and there is no situation that we can't handle together. When chaos arises, she calmly reassures me that we can fix it. In short, Betsy has the perfect balance of encouragement, firmness, academia, compassion, experience, humility, wisdom, and kindness to be a mentor to every kind of nurse.
