Bettina advocated for this family and involved the attending physician who called the mother and discussed the plan of care.
Bettina demonstrated extraordinary compassion during a recent admission of a set of 22+5 week twins. One of the twins had a spontaneous intestinal perforation when he was several weeks old and was transferred to Valley Children's Hospital which is several hours away. The hospital addressed the intestinal issue and the baby was recovering nicely.
When the mother started asking about the possibility of sending the baby back the tertiary facility said that the baby had stage 2 ROP and that BMH couldn't take care of that issue so they would not send him back. Bettina traded several emails with the VCH CNS and outreach coordinator about getting him back to BMH and informed them that BMH was perfectly capable of taking care of his medical needs. Bettina advocated for this family and involved the attending physician who called the mother and discussed the plan of care.
Through a collaborative effort led by Bettina the care team continued to advocate for the mother and her desire to have her twins housed under the same hospital in their hometown. Shortly after the infant was transferred back to BMH. The mother expressed that she is thrilled that they are in the same place and can spend time with both of them together. The staff expressed that seeing the reunion was "a pleasure to see." The mother had tears in her eyes and was vibrating with happiness telling everyone how happy she was to be here (at BMH) and how she loves the NICU and how much we love her babies. And most of all getting to hold them together is beautiful. Without the compassion and dedication of Bettina advocating for this family, this beautiful reunion would not have happened. This nomination is submitted on behalf of the family.
