Because of the leadership and teamwork demonstrated by Betty and other members of the healthcare team, there was no delay in giving prompt, efficient care to this woman and her infant.
Obstetrics had an emergent situation where a patient who needed an urgent Cesarean Section was brought to Triage. As I walked towards the OR and mentally prepared myself to perform a task that I have not done in more than 5 years, I decided to call the Surgery Charge Nurse to notify her of the need for an anesthesiologist. The nurse who answered the phone was Betty. I said, "We have an OB emergency!". She responded, "Do you need an anesthesiologist?" I said "Yes," and then I reluctantly followed up and said, "Do you have a tech that can scrub this case?" Betty responded and said that she would see what she could do.

I proceeded to the OR and started opening in preparation to scrub. A few minutes later I turned around, and approaching the OR door was Betty, a tech, and not one but two anesthesiologists. Betty stayed for a little longer to make sure everything was okay. Shortly after their arrival, the patient was brought to the OB OR. She was prepped and an emergency Cesarean Section was performed. A live infant was delivered in critical condition. Because of the leadership and teamwork demonstrated by Betty and other members of the healthcare team, there was no delay in giving prompt, efficient care to this woman and her infant. Betty's actions made a difference in the outcome of the infant. The infant was born alive. The parents were able to hold and touch their baby.
