Bianca was taking care of a Spanish speaking only patient. A 12-year-old patient, Bianca had worked with her on a previous night, but this night Bianca managed to break through and have such a powerful encounter with this patient. Without violating privacy laws, this patient basically had no family at the bedside, and had gone through a traumatic event; it was very hard for this frightened patient to even trust those around her.
In a hospital filled with people who do not speak her language, Bianca was able to communicate through the night using Google translate, and my help as I speak Spanish. Bianca, at one point, came out in tears telling me what this patient had opened up to her about. I saw how deeply Bianca was moved. It inspired me to see how she really empathized with this patient and showed such compassion. It made me cry!
At the end of our shift, Bianca asked me if I can help her proofread a letter she made to this patient. As I read her letter, I could not help but cry. She basically told this patient that they are a child of God and that they are not alone and are so loved. She told this patient it was an honor to have met and been able to care for them, and she also shared a few biblical verses for this patient for when they feel "alone, scared, and hurting." I believe this is an epitome of the true teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ that all of LLU strives to meet. I believe and have no doubt this patient was moved by that letter. Because as a nurse it moved me to see how much compassion and pure love Bianca displayed for this patient in such a vulnerable moment, she shared the love of Christ. Bianca truly went above and beyond to help this patient try to find healing not only physically but spiritually as well.
