Bianca Ramirez 2026, BSN, RN
When one of our young adult patients in his twenties walked through the hospital doors after experiencing persistent headaches, little did he know he was about to face a life-changing diagnosis. As he waited for MRIs to be completed, one can only imagine what was running through his mind—school, career aspirations, family, and friends.
On this day, an extraordinary nurse with remarkable compassion, Bianca Ramirez, assumed the care of this anxious and frightened young man. From the beginning, Bianca provided exceptional care not only to the patient, but also to his family. She took time to clearly communicate the plan of care, anticipated timelines, and any changes as they occurred, helping to ease their uncertainty during a very stressful time.
Once the MRIs were completed, the patient was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and a life-saving craniotomy for tumor resection was scheduled. Throughout her care, Bianca went above and beyond. She made it a priority to walk with the patient to the healing garden at least twice a day, allowing him moments of fresh air and peace amid his hospitalization. During these walks, the patient shared that despite his diagnosis, 2026 had been a meaningful year for him personally—he had met his future wife, and their wedding day was only weeks away. He described his fiancée as beautiful, sweet, caring, and absolutely perfect.
Bianca listened attentively, offering not only comfort but genuine presence. Rather than assuming how to help, she asked the patient what his thoughts and goals were regarding his upcoming wedding. He shared that his greatest wish was for the nuptials to proceed as planned, even if he remained hospitalized.
Taking this to heart, Bianca embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. In addition to being an exceptional nurse, she became a wedding planner. She immediately contacted the chaplain and informed unit leadership and staff. With less than a day to make this happen, she obtained approval and consent for media and photography from the patient and his family, ensured all hospital policies regarding decorations and venue were followed, and worked closely with the family to select the unit waiting area as the venue. This space allowed enough room for family guests and staff. The ceremony time was carefully chosen to align with the patient’s comfort and pain control needs.
On the day of the ceremony, the family members and staff gathered in the waiting area. Rose petals lined the floor for the bride’s entrance, and a beautiful bouquet awaited her arrival. In front of our eyes, the bride emerged, bouquet in hand, walking along the petals as staff and family softly hummed a song. The groom, dressed in his hospital gown, stood beside the chaplain, gazing adoringly at his bride. Intimate vows were exchanged, followed by hugs, kisses & tears of joy
