Integrity: While shadowing Bill on mental health home visits, we recognized the trusting relationships he built with his patients. With their rapport, it was clear all of his patients were open and honest about their mental health concerns, and Bill went above and beyond in making the Veterans feel heard and valued.
Commitment: Bill consistently went out of his way to make a visit with each of his assigned Veterans despite their current state. For example, one Veteran was in an acute rehab facility and Bill could have saved his visit for when he returned home, but Bill made it a priority to visit the Veteran at the facility to ensure his mental health needs were being addressed.
Advocacy: With Bill being a Veteran himself, he always brought his past military experiences to his home visits which made his Veterans comfortable sharing their stories. He was able to connect Veterans with various resources in the community, based on his own personal background and shared how he transitioned to civilian life after serving in the Marine Corps and Army Reserves.
Respect: We felt Bill was always welcoming and excited to have the Nurse Residents shadow him for his home visit. Despite the busy schedule he always made time to explain things and make us feel involved. It seemed as though he made each Veteran feel like they were his only patient and allowed them to make their home care visit unique.
Excellence: With every patient, Bill tailored his visit based on the patient's needs. For some of his Veterans, their time spent with Bill may be their only social interaction or outing for the week. Bill is well aware of this and goes above and beyond by taking his Veterans out into the community to enjoy some of their favorite restaurants and activities.
