BillieJo cares about me not just as a patient, but also as a person. She asks about my family and listens intently to each of my responses.
For nearly 10 years, I have been receiving IVIG infusions for my compromised immune system. I have met many incredible nurses along the way; however, there is one nurse in particular who has separated herself from all of the others. This nurse is BillieJo George, and I am honored to be nominating her today.
In my experience, most nurses are compassionate and empathetic, but BillieJo goes beyond her traditional job. BillieJo cares about me not just as a patient, but also as a person. She asks about my family and listens intently to each of my responses. All of the nurses on the unit do their job well, working together to help their patients and one another, but BillieJo has made me feel at home in the unit. In an environment that may otherwise be uncomfortable, she has made me and many others feel comfortable.
There was a period during my infusions when I had to be admitted to the hospital, and this caused me to miss my regular appointments on the unit. Worried about me, she reached out to my youngest daughter. The supervisor did not ask her to call and her job description did not require her to look into where I might be. BillieJo called because she cares; she cares about her relationships with each of her patients and that day I was fortunate she was checking in on me. And, because we share this special bond, my daughter felt comfortable telling her about what I was going through.
This is one small example of the kind of person and the kind of nurse BillieJo is. This role is not simply a job to her; it is a labor of love. She goes beyond her duties to provide her patients with the kind of care that they would receive from a loved one in their own homes. I believe the way in which she does her job gives great insight into how she is as a person – BillieJo is a true caregiver. She is selfless, trustworthy, and a listener. She makes the team around her even better. I truly believe she exemplifies all of the qualities of a DAISY Nurse. I have been so lucky to have her care and support over the years.
