I would like to nominate a truly deserving nurse who embodies the meaning of an extraordinary nurse. Maam Bindya took care of my son when he was admitted when he was only a day old. She was not only extremely knowledgeable and experienced at what she does, but more importantly, she was compassionate and provided genuine care, which she gave not only to my son but to me as well. She supported me through those difficult times, and I can remember her words comforting me and reassuring me that she would keep an eye on him so that I could rest for a few hours.

It was striking to me how powerful a simple gesture of compassion and empathy coming from your nurse can allay all your fears and apprehension. I remember a great adage saying, “The art of medicine is to cure sometimes, treat often, and comfort always.” Maam Bindya exemplified these words. The acts of kindness she has shown while at the same time showing such expertise in what she does such as regularly updating his doctor without prompting, offering suggestions on management, consolidating procedures to limit pricking and all the other small mundane things are truly worthy of such commendation. I realized that often all our gratitude is focused on the doctors who treat us (not belittling their roles) but we also need to acknowledge how key the role of our nurses is in ensuring our care.  I am sure that all other patients who received her care will echo the same words of appreciation and respect.
