Blair Parker, MSN, RN, CNL is an amazing nurse with more than 12 years of nursing experience. Blair demonstrates extraordinary compassionate care by empowering others to achieve goals and improve even when they have given up on themselves. Blair cared for a patient who had a liver transplant and was suffering from severe depression. Diagnosed with “failure to thrive” after an attempted suicide, the patient had completely given up on life. She didn’t want to eat, bathe, interact with others, or even get out of bed. Blair removed the hospital bed from the patient’s room and lovingly motivated the patient to get out of bed and live. Through her constant encouragement and the trusting compassionate relationship that she built with this patient, the patient overcame her depression and started making strides to getting better. Because of Blair’s efforts, this patient was discharged home instead of a facility, which was the original plan, with a new lease on life. 
In another example, her compassion made a difference in the life of a patient who was battling bladder cancer. She spent extra time explaining surgery options with him, at his level of understanding (health literacy) after the surgeon and advanced practitioners left his room to ensure that he understood which continent diversion to choose for surgery. He felt her patience and compassion went beyond the rest of the team and helped him choose the best choice for his lifestyle. This patient sang Blair’s praises to anyone that entered that room after her.
