Blair Rivers, RN, went above and beyond to facilitate medical transportation for a patient having same-day surgery.
Due to a surgical scheduling change, the patient who is wheelchair-bound and has total non-weight-bearing status was driven to the hospital for surgery by her husband who himself was not physically and mentally in a position to drive his wife back to where they live. They stated that they had medical transport arranged for their original surgery date but were not able to arrange transportation on this date due to short notice leaving them no option but to drive themselves. The patient was not going to be safe going back home post-surgery with her husband driving such a distance as he is elderly and suffers from short-term memory loss. Blair immediately assessed the situation and determined that the patient was going to require medical transport to return to her assisted living facility. She obtained all the necessary information from the patient and family to assist with arranging transport post-op.
Blair demonstrated the utmost sincere and genuine concern for this couple's welfare in making sure they had a safe way home after discharge. She worked with the family as well as the medical transport company and the patient's living facility to coordinate this care for the patient. She truly exemplifies the kind of nurse that anyone would want to take care of their family or themselves. Her professionalism and genuine desire to provide excellent care to our patients and families set her apart as a role model and a much-admired work colleague.
