My spouse returned to the Critical Care Unit after surgery and was intubated when I saw him. Visiting hours in the Critical Care Unit are very strict. I was told that he would not be extubated before the end of visiting hours. Blake Bauer was very informative as to the steps needed to extubate a patient and assured me that my spouse would not be uncomfortable during the procedure. There were a few times that it appeared that my spouse was coming out of sedation, and at one point, he needed to have his hands restrained. Blake again talked me through this. This was all so comforting to me to know that my spouse was in good hands after an invasive surgery. Later that evening, Blake called me and told me that they had extubated my spouse with no complications. He handed the phone to my spouse so I could let my spouse know that I would be there in the morning. This allowed me to sleep better in a hotel away from home. In my eyes, as a nurse myself, Blake went above and beyond his critical care nursing duties to ensure the patient's family member was also OK.
