June 2026 Honoree
Blanca Martinez-Medina, BSN, RN, CPHON, TCTCN
Where do you even begin when describing a nurse like Blanca Martinez? Blanca is the very definition of what it means to be a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse. Her compassion, selflessness, patience, and unwavering dedication extend far beyond the bedside, leaving a lasting impact on every child, family, and coworker fortunate enough to know her. In our 3E Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit, Blanca consistently gives her whole heart to her patients and their families. She approaches every child with gentleness, empathy, and genuine care, always taking the time to ensure they feel safe, comforted, and understood during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. No matter how busy or emotionally demanding the unit becomes, Blanca never allows her patients to feel rushed or overlooked. She makes every interaction meaningful, reminding families that they are not alone in their journey.
What makes Blanca truly extraordinary is that her compassion does not end when her shift does. Every few months, Blanca donates her platelets with the hope that they may one day help a child battling cancer or a blood disorder. Year after year, she also grows and donates her hair to children who lose theirs during treatment. The most remarkable part of these selfless acts is that she never seeks recognition or praise for them. She simply gives because caring for children is who she is at her core. Blanca’s impact extends far beyond her patients. She is an exceptional mentor and preceptor who has guided and trained countless new nurses. Each one describes her as patient, kind, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive. She teaches with compassion, leads by example, and creates an environment where new nurses feel encouraged, valued, and confident in their abilities. Her calm presence and willingness to help others make her someone her coworkers deeply trust and admire.
In addition to her daily role, Blanca has also played an important part in helping our unit grow through the development of the new Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program. As one of the few nurses specially trained in BMT care, she stepped up to help support both patients and staff during this transition. Her knowledge, dedication, and willingness to take on such a specialized role have been invaluable to the success of the program and to the care of some of our most medically fragile patients. One of the most inspiring things about Blanca is the pure passion she has for nursing. When asked what she envisions for her future, her answer is simple: she wants to continue being a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse. Blanca has found her purpose in caring for these children and families, and anyone who works alongside her can see the joy, love, and meaning she pours into her work every single day. Blanca embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. She is compassionate, humble, selfless, and wholeheartedly devoted to her patients, their families, and her team. She brings comfort during heartbreak, hope during uncertainty, and kindness in every moment. Our unit, our patients, and the nursing profession are profoundly better because of Blanca Martinez.
