In 2013 all of the UTHSCSA pediatric surgical services moved from Santa Rosa Children's Hospital to UHS. At that time there was no existing staff for the pre-op area for pediatric patients, nor were there any protocols for admitting patients from Outpatient Surgery Department to a pediatric holding area outside the pediatric operating suites. Ensuring a smooth transition of families from admission to the hospital to the operating room is essential for families coming in with their children who are about to undergo a surgical procedure.
Shay was hired shortly after opening the pediatric holding area and has been instrumental in developing procedures to expedite the transfer of patients from admitting and from inpatient floors to the holding area. She has a wonderful attitude and is well received by patients and families. Since Shay started here she has often been the only nurse in the holding area and has taken care of our growing pediatric census tirelessly and with great compassion for our patients.
Many times when children have to come for multiple procedures, the families look forward to being received by Shay. She is a great communicator with families, surgeons, fellow nurses, and anesthesiologists. She has been instrumental in the continued growth of our pediatric surgical services due to the efficient way she is able to process patients through the system, yet making every child and family feel like they are the most important ones of her day. We all would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Shay's tireless commitment to patient care.
