We felt as if he really cared about her more than just being a patient; he wanted to see the best for her.
Mom was admitted to the hospital a week ago because she fainted and fell, cracked her skull, and had bleeding on the brain. She has been in the ICU since the moment she arrived, and only through the care of everyone has she been able to finally be awake and even start talking. However, nights are always the hardest, and last night we had Brad. He was so good with my mom that he was able to do additional tasks that other night nurses did not do. He took extra special care in giving my mom oral care, explaining to her why she had to be restrained, explaining to her why she was there even when she got caught in one of her verbal repetitive “loops.” He shared personal stories with me and my husband since we stayed with my mom all night. We felt as if he really cared about her more than just being a patient; he wanted to see the best for her. He did several false toileting requests and always had a smile, which I’m sure was frustrating. Brad gave her a full bed bath, which she had not gotten so far during her stay. It’s the small things that make the difference: addressing the family by name, bringing extra pillows without request for repositioning, and even updating the board in her room (that other night nurses did not do) that make the difference to my mom and our whole family.
