Bradley Torrie 2, BScN, RN, SCRN, CNRN
I am writing to nominate Bradley for recognition because of the exceptional care, compassion, and support he provided to my father and our family during an extremely difficult hospital stay. His kindness, patience, and professionalism made a lasting impact on me, especially during moments when I felt anxious, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to help my father.
Hospitals have caused me fear and anxiety ever since COVID, so when my family began taking overnight turns staying with my father, I was nervous about being there alone. On June 5, I volunteered to stay with him, but I quickly felt overwhelmed. I did not know what condition I would find him in, and although my family told me I might need to suction him, no one had shown me how.
Bradley entered the room, introduced himself as my father’s nurse for the night, and immediately noticed that I was emotional. He sat down with me, answered my questions without judgment, and patiently showed me how to use the suction machine. His calm and reassuring presence helped me feel more confident and less alone.
Throughout the night, Bradley included me in my father’s care, explained what he was doing, and checked in often. His compassion stood out in every interaction. The way he spoke with my father felt less like a nurse speaking to a patient and more like a son speaking to his father; he talked, laughed, and connected even while my father was very ill. Bradley also respected what mattered to our family.
When I asked whether we could use Zamzam holy water instead of regular water during medication times, he explained that we could continue as long as my father’s sodium levels remained safe. When the bloodwork came back normal, he allowed us to continue, and that meant so much to me.
When I later asked about preventing bed sores and rotating my father from side to side, Bradley quickly brought positioning wedges and helped make him more comfortable. Because of his care that night, I felt supported enough to return for another overnight stay.
I brought my schoolwork with me, expecting another calm night, but shortly after my family left, my father suddenly grabbed my hijab, hit me, and said harsh things. I was frightened and embarrassed. Bradley came in right away, calmed my father, and then checked on me with genuine concern. After the doctor prescribed medication to help my father rest, Bradley explained what had happened and taught me about sundowning, a term I had never heard of before. That experience was terrifying, but he went above and beyond to help me through it.
He brought me ice cream to calm my nerves, later noticed I was working on schoolwork and brought me coffee, and continued checking on both me and my father throughout the night. He allowed me to assist with my father’s care again, including blood pressure checks, and helped turn a frightening experience into one where I felt cared for, informed, and supported.
Bradley deserves to be recognized because he did far more than provide medical care. He brought comfort, dignity, patience, and humanity to my father’s bedside. He supported not only his patient, but also our family during one of the most vulnerable moments of our lives. I will always remember the compassion he showed us, and I sincerely hope he is honored for the extraordinary care he provides.
