My dad was Brandon's patient following an above the knee amputation. I should point out that my father is 95 and lost his leg because of an aneurysm in his groin with a blood clot. He is also hard of hearing and has a home care provider that has been with him for 10 years. We told each care provider at Clarkson that his CNA was to be treated as a family member and listened to and provided any information she requested. Not all staff were as accepting of our wishes as Brandon was. He got to know dad and it was important to dad's care.

We felt an echo was needed and spoke to the doctor about writing the order but he did not think it was necessary. Dad had a DNR/DNI in place and the doctor did not want to go ahead and check things out. When the doctor stepped into the hall Brandon followed him to the computer and showed his compassion for my father by stating, "This is not the typical 95-year-old man. He is strong and determined. We need to do what we can to get him where he can go home and get back to his life." He advocated for dad and our family. He had listen to our wishes and understood we did not consider dad's condition as life ending, just another challenge for him and his body.

My sister had flown in from San Antonio and I was there from an hour south of Kansas City. I spoke to the manager one day in his office and told him about Brandon's care and fine "service" and stated he would receive my report in writing once I got home to my PC. I was later informed about the DAISY Award and decided this was the best way to notify others what a fine nurse and outstanding man Brandon Fleharty is. His care and compassion were appreciated and did make a difference in our lives.

Dad is home and is healing and Brandon's sense of humor--kidding dad about things at home--were part of keeping his spirits up so the healing process could happen. Brandon Fleharty is an employee Clarkson can be extremely proud to call a member of the fine team there in Omaha.
