She spoke calmly and slowly as she explained plans for the day and nursing interventions. Her compassion in her body language and speech placed my brother at ease.
Brandy exemplifies nursing professional and patient safety. I'm going to use QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) model to describe her related to our story.
Patient-centered care: My brother was readmitted to treat and manage a bladder hemorrhage; a very scary time for my brother and family. Brandy recognized my brother and our family as a partner in his care. She spoke calmly and slowly as she explained plans for the day and nursing interventions. Her compassion in her body language and speech placed my brother at ease. Her professionalism reflected her respect for all people and placed my brother at ease as well.
2. Brandy coordinated the care for my brother through involving other team members. This practice ensured my brother got the care as immediately as possible. During an obstructed foley catheter episode, causing discomfort and stress to my brother, she delegated appropriately and requested help from the team. These prompt actions provided relief from bladder spasms and stress reduction for my brother. She is definitely a team player and role model for novice nurses.
3. & 4. Evidence-based practice and quality improvement: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a killer in hospitals and the risk for a CAUTI was real for my brother, as evidenced by urinary catheter and bladder irrigation. Her dedication to hospital protocols and procedures provided safe management of the catheter. Brandy reflects investment in nursing and communicates the need to improve and recommends quality-based care during hand-off.
5. Brandy places safety above all other practices throughout her dealings with my brother. This was manifested in fall prevention measures, identification prior to med administration, preventing and management of bladder hemorrhage, and infection prevention.
6. Informatics: Brandy's documentation was thorough and provided the medical-surgical teams with the information they needed to care for my brother. Her attention to detail while caring for my brother's multiple drains provided the providers with an up-to-date look at my brother's case.
