As an assistant professor of dental hygiene, I've long understood the disparity between classroom teachings and real-world clinical practice. In graduate school, my thesis and research centered on patient-centered communication and its profound impact on clinical care. But beyond academia, my life has been intricately woven with experiences in healthcare, shaping my perspective in profound ways. 

From my childhood battles with epilepsy to navigating the complexities of muscular dystrophy alongside my grandmother's end-of-life journey, and witnessing my father's relentless fights against cancer, I've traversed the spectrum of healthcare as both a patient and a family caregiver. Now, amidst my own journey with soft tissue sarcoma of the head and neck, I've encountered a myriad of healthcare professionals, each leaving an indelible mark on my story. 

Among them stands Bre, a nurse whose dedication shines through a tunnel of darkness. In what could arguably be the most vulnerable chapter of my life, she didn't merely assume the role of caregiver; she became a beacon of kindness, empathy, and unwavering hope. Her communication with me and my family was always respectful and warm, her presence a source of solace in the storm. 

As an educator, my heightened awareness of cross-contamination in healthcare underscores the significance of Bre's meticulous attention to detail. She not only met but surpassed every expectation, setting a standard of care that left an enduring impression. 

When my husband learned of this award, his immediate reaction mirrored my own admiration for Bre's exceptional care and compassion. In my brief time under her care, she transformed my life with her boundless optimism and love. Even if she doesn't clinch this well-deserved award, her care demands acknowledgment. 

Bre has found her calling and rises to the challenge with unwavering grace, regardless of the obstacles she encounters.
