On a very difficult day as a pediatric hospice nurse, Brenda Wright took time out of her own work day as a hospice case manager and came to a patient's home to assist me. The patient was a 2-year-old and was very ill. Her decline transpired very quickly and I was at the home for several hours. Blood work was needed and unfortunately, I did not have all the supplies in the home. Brenda was very quick to offer to get what I needed and bring it to the home. Once she arrived, she helped me by holding the patient. Obviously, after being stuck for labs the patient was very inconsolable. Brenda picked the patient up and rocked her until she was calm and held her while I was on the phone getting orders and preparing the samples to be taken to the lab. Brenda hummed and sang to the patient as she rocked her. The patient felt Brenda's calming presence and at that moment was so comfortable that the parents and I were all shocked. This patient rarely liked to be held! After getting her to calm down, Brenda then grabbed my labs and took them to the hospital for me….(another thing she did not have to do but offered all while needing to see her own patient's as well). Unfortunately, the patient passed away - but I and the family both agreed that Brenda went above and beyond that day when she absolutely did not have to. The compassion she showed to this sweet family will always be remembered by them and her willingness to help me will never be forgotten. She made an extremely difficult time just a little bit easier for everyone that day.
