Brenda exemplifies the compassionate care that is the core of the DAISY Award. In her role as a Transfer Center Liaison, Brenda uses her many years of critical care nursing and leadership experience to facilitate appropriate patient transfers. Her position requires her to multitask to coordinate, prioritize, and optimize patient flow. Although Brenda does not provide direct care to patients, her tireless efforts assure that patients receive the appropriate care that they need.
A few weeks ago, a pediatric patient needed critical care transport from our facility to a rehabilitation facility much closer to home. The transport was scheduled, but the transport team was unexpectedly called out for an emergency transport, causing the pediatric patient's transport to be rescheduled. This happened several days in a row, causing an increase in hospital length of stay. The parents of the patient were frustrated, but understanding. Brenda made multiple calls to the unit and to the critical care transport team to coordinate a solution.
The patient was transported in the early morning as scheduled, much to the delight of the parents. Those parents will never know how hard Brenda worked to assure the transport happened. This is just one example of the many ways that Brenda works to coordinate the best possible outcome for our patients.
