Brenda’s commitment to service on all levels not only reflects well on the College of Nursing but is one of the many ways that she is a role model to her students.  Brenda demonstrates the professionalism, community involvement, and leadership that she teaches.
I believe that Brenda is an excellent candidate for this award as she has consistently demonstrated her extraordinary commitment to her students, her peers, the College of Nursing, and the nursing profession.

Brenda joined the College of Nursing in 2018 and has used her experience as a nurse educator to advance and improve the RN-BSN program.  In addition to developing course content that is focused on student learning needs, she also helped improve learning opportunities by developing many new practicum sites for the RN-BSN Community and Public Health Practicum and the PR IV Leadership and Professional Engagement course.  Brenda has also had an active role in improving both the RN-BSN and pre-licensure programs through her work in many committees, including her current role as Chair of the BSN forum and AACN New Essentials champion.  Brenda also serves on state and local committees, through organizations such as the Iowa Board of Nursing and the Iowa Nurses Association.  Brenda’s commitment to service on all levels not only reflects well on the College of Nursing but is one of the many ways that she is a role model to her students.  Brenda demonstrates the professionalism, community involvement, and leadership that she teaches.

One of Brenda’s many strengths is her ability to think about the student’s experience, which is why she goes above and beyond in working with her students. Brenda deeply cares about not only their growth and learning but also who they are as individuals.  Students consistently mention Brenda’s ability to help connect them to a sense of community, her support in difficult times, and her positive communication and feedback.  I have seen this personally working with Brenda as an academic success coach.  Brenda connects with these students and works with them to identify what they need to succeed.  These students also consistently mention the positive feedback and encouragement that they receive from Brenda.

Brenda is an educational leader who is eager to help others learn, whether it is students or faculty.  Brenda has mentored students in their BSN honors project, serves as a mentor in the University of Iowa First Generation Mentor program, and has mentored several new faculty members.  Brenda is someone who has made a great impact on her students and in the College of Nursing and is deserving of the DAISY faculty award.

Dr. Duree has been a nurse educator for over 20 years and has been teaching at the University of Iowa for the past several years. She exemplifies the qualities of a leader and educator. She promotes, encourages, and is accommodating, approachable, and understanding. Not only has she been my teacher in some of my courses, but she also mentored me for a quality project during my RN-BSN program where she emphasized evidence-based practice, using PDSA, the change process, and dissemination to be successful with quality improvement. Once I was in my final semester of my BSN (three years ago), she encouraged me to continue my education which inspired me to apply for graduate study. This past semester (Fall 2022) she was my preceptor for an education project in my DNP program.
Dr. Duree’s short- and long-term goal-setting, leadership assessments, and reflective writing assignments helped me discover my strengths, and work on my weaknesses. Her coursework helped my decision-making, and my leadership skills, and essentially, this helped me reach my potential and acquire the motivation to excel as a nursing leader. Prior, I was shy and afraid to make critical decisions or to use my voice. With my BSN studies, I discovered my voice in advocating for patients and staff and proactively addressing issues. I developed the courage and confidence to handle challenges and the perseverance to not give up despite hurdles and demands. Especially during review of the QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) competencies, Dr. Duree challenged me to reflect on my nursing education and the standards for professional nursing practice.

Prior to teaching, Dr. Duree’s nursing experience varied across different life spans and population types. She has had various teaching and education roles where she has contributed to the growth and development of nursing education. She has well-rounded nursing and teaching experience that allows her to connect with and inspire students. She is a great role model and I aspire to be a nurse educator like her someday!

Brenda is an extraordinary professor who goes above and beyond the expectations of her job. She demonstrates patience and kindness with every interaction, two qualities I admire as a primarily virtual student. Her daily announcement posts, creativity, and ease of access mimic the classroom experience. Brenda elevates the virtual learning environment compared to her counterparts. She ensures frequent availability, responds to emails in a timely manner, and provides proactive feedback. Professor Duree takes the time to get to know each and every student, a trait that is reinforced time and time again. Her interactive approach to teaching makes you feel more involved in your studies. She encourages students to critically think while offering new perspectives on the material. Brenda’s criticism is always thoughtful. She makes her efforts obvious through her work. Her work never suggests shortcuts as assignment comments are persistently in-depth, instructions are clearly explained, and rapport is always prioritized. As a student of Professor Duree’s, I can confidently say her skills as an educator have contributed to the growth of my knowledge. Brenda has always made me feel so comfortable as a virtual student, specifically. As someone who has a frequent urge to ask questions, Professor Duree never hesitated to address them. She welcomes questions, comments, and concerns at any hour of the day, showing no signs of resistance until solutions are identified. I can think of no one better for this award. Brenda Duree has undoubtfully earned this nomination.

I had Dr. Brenda Duree as a professor through my RN-BSN nursing courses at Iowa and I am nominating her for the DAISY faculty award. I couldn’t tell you enough about how wonderful she is, both as a person and as an educator. I’ve had many professors throughout my nursing career both at Kirkwood and Iowa, and I can tell you that she is the ONE who I look up to the most. Brenda’s caring and compassionate way of teaching provides a glimpse into her love for what she does. In today’s world and with the pandemic still ongoing, nurses struggle to find that spark that led them to nursing in the first place. Brenda gives you that hope for our future as nurses in the way she is excited to teach and pushes all her students to finish strong and be the best that they can be!

While obtaining my BSN, I was working full time, moving across the country twice a year (for my husband’s NFL career), planning my wedding, and trying to help take care of my sick grandmother from afar. It was difficult, to say the least. Brenda took the time to Zoom with me whenever I had questions. She took the time out of her day to reach out and check up on me to make sure that things were going smoothly with school and even my crazy personal life. She was so quick to respond to emails and set up virtual meetings. It felt like I was there in her office, in person, getting advice on assignments and projects.

Last year I received my first DAISY nomination pin while working on my pre- and post-operative unit at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. I wear it proudly on my badge and truly give credit to Dr. Duree and the RN-BSN program at the University of Iowa for my accomplishment. Brenda taught me the importance of obtaining my BSN. It has provided me with greater patient outcomes, higher earning potentials, better job security, but most importantly, improved my critical thinking, leadership, and health promotion skills. I believe Dr. Brenda Duree deserves a DAISY Award for her above-and-beyond teaching skills and professionalism. She was the best mentor I could have asked for!
