I feel Brenda Normoyle demonstrates qualities for the DAISY Award, because she has concern and dedication to patient’s health and well being, even beyond the hospital setting. An excellent example of this was shown in the recent care of a patient, whose story I would enjoy sharing with you. Our unit had a young man, who was diagnosed with a ruptured appendix. He was consequently very ill, and stayed with us for several weeks. His family had twelve children, and his parents were not able to visit often. Brenda would sit with the patient during her shift and on her days off. She knew that the family had limited resources and there was concern he would not have adequate food at home. Brenda took the family food, donated clothing, and tutored him though his missed schoolwork. She was able to provide a support that his family could not, and made a major impact on his healing. What an example for all nurses to follow!
