Brenda was so kind, thoughtful, genuine, and funny.
I am writing to nominate my wonderful night nurse, Brenda, on the 6th floor for a DAISY Award. I know how important it is to get positive feedback these days- healthcare is DIFFICULT, especially after the past couple of years, and our nurses work so very hard. I had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction. I was in surgery for 8-9 hours. Not only was this a scary surgery and a hard decision to make, I had never had something as invasive or lengthy as this surgery. After recovery, I was transferred to my room right around shift change when Brenda came on duty (my other nurse may have been wonderful as well, but I do not remember being transferred, honestly). Brenda was so kind, thoughtful, genuine, and funny. She kept saying I was a “boring” patient since I didn’t really need much and was stable, and I know she most likely had many other patients with more intense needs than my own, but you would never know it when she was helping me. She had no way of knowing how scared I was (I had thought that my husband would be able to stay with me, but he could not) but still treated me like I was her only patient. When I was scared from the after-effects of the anesthesia and felt like I wasn’t able to make sense, she assured me that I was going to be ok and to just sleep. Each time she came into my room, rather than turning on the light first, she would cover my eyes with a towel so it would not be so jarring when I woke up. She even made a joke that she would time her checks on me with her favorite scenes from “Top Gun” that was on the TV, which I had on because I needed some noise when I was scared. Brenda was so kind when I was scared of having my catheter removed and was so gentle. She provided me with dignified support when I needed help getting to the bathroom. She felt like an angel to me. I know this is her job, and she most likely does these tasks during each shift, but I wanted her and you all to know just how much the WAY she did her job helped this very scared patient feel at ease, respected, and comforted. I may have been a “boring” patient to her, but to me, she made all the difference in the world with my care, and I attribute the positive beginning of my recovery to her. Thank you, Brenda, from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget your kindness.
