She took the time to explain everything that was happening in clear, thorough detail to me, while also thoughtfully adjusting how she communicated with my dad, who does not have a medical background.

I am honored to nominate Brenda for The DAISY Award. She exemplifies the kind of nurse that patients, families, and colleagues recognize as an outstanding role model through both her clinical expertise and her deeply compassionate care.

My mom was admitted to the ICU, and Brenda was her nurse during the first two days of what was an incredibly frightening and uncertain time for our family. Even though I am an RN myself, this experience felt very different being on the other side. Brenda immediately created a sense of calm in what felt like chaos.

She took the time to explain everything that was happening in clear, thorough detail to me, while also thoughtfully adjusting how she communicated with my dad, who does not have a medical background.

She made sure he understood what was going on, felt included in the plan of care, and never felt left behind in the conversation. Brenda very easily could have relied on me to bridge that gap, but instead, she took it upon herself to ensure both of us felt informed, supported, and involved.

During those first two critical days, Brenda consistently demonstrated professionalism, a positive attitude, and strong collaboration with the entire healthcare team. It was clear that her care was grounded in evidence-based practice, but what stood out even more was the way she paired that knowledge with genuine compassion. She treated my mom not just as a patient, but as a person.

Once my mom was extubated, Brenda had already made a lasting impact. She had built a foundation of trust and comfort that carried forward, and even in those early moments, she was able to bring a sense of lightness and reassurance that helped my mom feel safe and cared for.

Brenda made a significant difference in one of the most vulnerable moments of our lives. We will never forget the kindness, patience, and dedication she showed during those first critical days.
