Brenda Steenhoek has a reputation for going above and beyond for her patients. Every day she shows service and kindness to everyone she meets. Her happy and cheerful attitude makes her visits an experience that each of her patients looks forward to when she comes to see them. There are lots of stories about her and ways that she tries to make her patients feel appreciated and special.

One story is the act of stopping to pick up an ice cream sundae for one of her patients who loves a good treat but has no way to get it herself. Not just once or twice but regularly she shows up with a treat to brighten her patient's day. Or the lady who desperately wants to remain living at home and this nurse's ability to coordinate care for her so that she can continue to do that has helped this patient not have to move to a nursing home.

Brenda is a strong advocate for all of her patients but seems to gravitate to those who have very challenging and difficult living situations. Her ability to consistently interact with them in ways that promote dignity and respect is something that families just seem to trust her and look forward to her coming into their home.

Recently Brenda worked hard to help a patient continue to qualify for the elderly waiver as funds to obtain services needed to stay in her home. When the patient was notified that she no longer qualified, she immediately focused on the situation and worked hard to figure out an alternative plan by collaborating with the patient's doctor and working within her resources to get her qualified to keep some nursing visits and get referred to a social worker who could help the patient figure out a longer term plan to make sure the resources were made available to her. Brenda's biggest concern was that the patient could not go without having the care she needed. When she found out that she was going to be able to keep going to visit this patient, the joy that she expressed was so revealing and came across as such a victory. All because she knew that the patient would continue to get the services that she needed without a break in service.

Brenda works hard every single day to make sure that patients get what they need when they need it. She will go the extra mile or work a longer day or make a trip without hesitation. The joy she has for serving and caring for patients just shines like a bright light for others to see!
