Brent is well known at Cedar Falls Medical Center. He is known as the 'Jack of all trades.' He is the go-to person when it comes to knowing where to find something, order something, place an ultrasound-guided IV, or carry the House Supervisor pager. He is often the first to respond to a Code or to come in to help on a day off. The list could go on and on to cover the amazing things Brent does to provide care for all our patients.
With this knowledge, along with his love for this hospital and the people in it, Brent was instrumental in helping the ED, as well as ASU, prepare for a potential COVID-19 surge. He helped supply ASU with ED items they would potentially need during a surge, as well as orienting them to charting in First Net (the ED system). It was the big and little things that Brent did to prepare us for those situations. He helped locate extra monitors that would be needed for triaging ED patients outside or in the lobby. He prepared a cart full of PPE, including forms that would be needed, pens, sanitizer, and bags for the yellow gowns. He ordered extra disposable blood pressure cuffs and brought forth the idea to order extra thermometers to be ready for all the surge stations.
Brent took the extra computers outside to test the connection to Wi-Fi to make sure there weren't any issues. He helped prepare a room in Admissions that was also going to be used for triage temporarily, including crawling under the desk to make sure everything was plugged in (which was funny at that moment by the way).
While we did not have that surge, thankfully, we felt comfortable and ready to care for our patients because Brent made sure every T was crossed and I was dotted. He completely owned it, was innovative with his creativity, and did everything he could to not only ensure nurses were comfortable but that the consumer experience was of top priority! Brent is truly a dedicated nurse and is an exemplary example of what an invested employee looks like!
