My story begins when I was discharged from Chambersburg Hospital after having a panniculectomy. As I looked down to my left hand, I saw what I now know was a very large hematoma, but at the time looked very frighteningly like a very large, dark purple plum under the skin of my hand. Clearly, something was terribly wrong. As we returned to where we had been discharged, Brett was exiting the building. Brett asked if he could help. I showed him my hand and explained that I was heading back into the hospital. Brett calmy explained that by unwrapping the bandage and pressing firmly, Brett could alleviate the collection of blood.

Brett made a significant and successful effort, and I was able to return home without having to reenter the hospital. Though I had a flat bruise on my hand for two months, I was confident I received the best medical attention. The reason this stands out to me is that Brett was exiting the hospital, so it is clear to Brett did this on their own time. Brett fortified my faith both in human kind and the medical profession.

I had to have a second emergency surgery regarding the original surgery. When I came out of anesthesia, Brett recognized me and took exemplary care of me before my discharge. His acknowledgment, patience, caring, and even humor gave me the utmost confidence and comfort. Brett distinguishes themselves as a professional who embodies the sum total of essential qualities needed in nursing. The outstanding application of his skills should be celebrated and honored.
