J suffered an ATV accident where the ATV rolled over his left lower extremity and he was in severe pain. After examining his leg myself (I've been previously certified as an EMR), and feeling fairly sure that there wasn't a break I still felt it prudent to have the leg and foot x-rayed to be doubly sure. Upon arrival to BMH-NM's ER department and checking in, it was only a matter of a few minutes, probably less than 10, when the triage nurse called for my 11 year old. He was of course upset and in pain and this was his first trip to the ER for treatment for any reason. He promptly was examined by a Brett who advised the Nurse Practitioner of his condition and x-rays were taken right there in the ED. A few minutes later, Brett came back with a light pain med for my son and an ice pack and made sure he was comfortable. He was very nice to my son and they chatted a few minutes about our weekend plans and his nice smile immediately put my son at ease.
A short period of time later Brett came back and advised us that the leg or foot was indeed not broken but just sprained. Brett and J conversed about a movie J wanted to see later in the weekend, and J left the ED no longer a scared, apprehensive young man, but with a smile and ready for a quick run through a drive-thru on the way home for dinner.
Having been a patient of BMH-NM several times in my life and always appreciating the degree of care I've received there, it was even more important to me that my child receive that same degree of compassion and care that was demonstrated that evening in the ER department. They made a scary trying event for my son a pleasant and educational experience.
