This person was assigned as my husband’s nurse. We both felt they went above and beyond in his care. To put it simply, the previous day and a half before this, we felt left in the dark about what the status was for his needed tests, what the results were when finally completed, or what the treatment plan was. By Wednesday evening, we were both feeling frustrated by the seeming lack of communication and the infrequency of checks by nursing staff to ensure he was still comfortable/not in pain. This person checked on him at shift start on Thursday and continued to check in frequently throughout the day until he was discharged; they made sure that his pain didn't get above an unmanageable level. He had a PRN order for pain meds, and they would ask if he needed it BEFORE the time window was up, so that if the pharmacy had to send up any meds, they were in the unit at the time, it could be given. This person also kept us very informed about what was happening 'behind the scenes' so that we were not just sitting and wondering when he would get taken for the procedure, what still needed done, etc... When we mentioned that the cardio team had not stopped by yet, they paged them and kept working on getting the team to come answer the questions we had, but this person did answer what they were able to & didn't brush us off or try to quickly 'pass the buck' to the cardio team. Even though they probably had other patients to care for as well, this person made us feel like my husband's care & comfort was their #1 top priority and never made us feel like we were burdening their already busy day by asking for updates or help, etc... They always had a bright, sunny, helpful attitude and really made us feel taken care of. Every patient should have a nurse like this person who truly cares for and advocates for their patients.
