He does not hesitate to step into any role necessary to support his team and ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
Brian Dalton, who has served as Nurse Supervisor on 4-East for over a decade, is truly the steady presence and Guardian of the unit. In times of critical staffing shortages and constant change, Brian can always be found thoughtfully problem-solving to ensure his staff feels seen, heard, supported, and advocated for.
He consistently leads by example. When staffing is tight, Brian willingly takes on a patient assignment to allow the RNs a more manageable 4:1 ratio. When only one tech is left on the floor, he divides the 20-bed unit in half and assumes PCT responsibilities for 10 patients himself. He does not hesitate to step into any role necessary to support his team and ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
What makes Brian truly exceptional extends beyond his clinical leadership. He brings warmth, creativity, and joy to 4-East. He decorates and maintains the unit, prepares thoughtful food platters for staff meetings, organizes birthday potlucks, brings goodie bags to one-on-one check-ins, and meticulously plans the annual 4-East holiday celebration - personally shopping for and wrapping more than 30 gifts and gift cards. He finds genuine joy in the joy of others. Yet more powerful than the celebrations and thoughtful gestures is the steadiness he brings. Brian quietly attends to the unseen, often thankless tasks that keep the unit running smoothly. He organizes the supply Pyxis so intuitively that other units have commented on its efficiency. He ensures patient nutrition is stocked for the week, reorganizes the dirty utility room so equipment fits precisely, and routinely declutters the clean utility and “junk basket” areas - tasks that inevitably need repeating. Week after week, year after year, he completes the small but essential duties that others overlook.
Brian wears many hats, and he wears them exceptionally well. His leadership has been instrumental in maintaining a strong core staff on 4-East over the past several years. Nurses and PCTs alike consistently share that they have remained on the unit because of Brian’s quiet steadiness, unwavering advocacy, and selfless dedication.
For years, Brian has carried out these countless acts of service without seeking recognition - simply because that is who he is. It is for these reasons that the staff of 4-East is honored to nominate Brian Dalton for the Nurse Leader DAISY Award. His impact is profound, and this recognition is long overdue.
