Brian’s ability to establish rapport and maintain communication exemplifies the essence of nursing and the importance of the patient-nurse relationship.
I am nominating Brian Ng for the DAISY Award for his exceptional care and quick thinking. While working as a float nurse on G2S, Brian received a call from a former patient who was lost and confused. Recognizing her voice, he recalled her struggles with severe Alzheimer’s and dementia, including a previous incident where she had eloped from the hospital.
Understanding the urgency of the situation, Brian calmly kept her on the phone, reassuring her that he was the kind of nurse who had cared for her before. He instructed her to find nearby street signs while he used Google Maps to track her location, which was only a few blocks from her home.
After contacting the police department, Brian learned they were delayed in responding. Anticipating her anxiety, he encouraged her to move but insisted she keep him updated on her surroundings. When the police were unable to reach her husband, Brian obtained the husband's contact information and informed him that his wife was at a nearby CVS. This news brought immediate relief to the husband.
Brian followed up 30 minutes later and learned that the patient had returned home safely, assisted by the police. His knowledge of the patient, willingness to help, and strong critical thinking skills were crucial in ensuring her safe return. Brian’s ability to establish rapport and maintain communication exemplifies the essence of nursing and the importance of the patient-nurse relationship. He truly goes above and beyond for patient safety and deserves this recognition.
