Brian Rios, RN, CCRN
ICU Nurse Brian truly went above and beyond caring for our mother on her final day of life. He worked tirelessly to keep her as comfortable as possible and maintain her dignity as her body was sadly shutting down. Never did her family feel like Brian was rushing them so that he could tend to other patients, which of course he had.
He also had the delicate job of keeping her best friend and three family members, who were present, informed, as well as her two daughters who were in transit, scrambling to get to their mother from afar. Brian and Dr. Seagraves worked seamlessly together, monitoring her labs and updating family.
When it became clear that neither daughter would be able to arrive before her body would cease, despite life support efforts, they advised the daughters. Her daughters chose to say their final words to their mother via speakerphone, then allowed for her to gradually be pulled off of life support.
Nurse Brian was so comforting, walking us through every step of the process and never rushing us. The one daughter actually requested that Brian be the one to call the time of death when her mother finally passed, as she found his manner so comforting.
It was a very tough day for all who loved the patient, but Brian made us feel like everything possible was done to help her and then ultimately allow her to pass peacefully.
