Brianna was able to get enough information to find the patient's hotel in a major city with over 90K people and dozens of hotels. She was finally able to tell 911 the patient's location.
ARN saved a patient’s life today and deserves a DAISY Award and recognition for her efforts. The patient called in and she began to assess him. He was going in and out of consciousness, stating he was bleeding out. ARN contacted me for support, and we began to try to figure out where the patient was. Using her nursing judgment, ARN quickly recognized the patient needed rescuing and she needed to call 911 directly. Although the ARN had not done this before at the Call Center, the ARN followed directions on how to contact 911 while staying calm and trying to support the patient. ARN worked with the 911 operator to try to find the patient. ARN began asking the patient a series of questions to narrow down his location, using her nursing knowledge and knowledge of the area. This knowledge saved the patient's life. 911 told Brianna they were going to try to find the patient while ARN persisted with the disoriented patient to try to narrow down his location. She was able to get enough information to find the patient's hotel in a major city with over 90K people and dozens of hotels. ARN was finally able to tell 911 the patient's location. The patient was still in and out of consciousness. Privately, ARN expressed her fear that the patient was going to die from the way he sounded, but she stayed calm and persistent in her efforts to ensure and locate him. The ambulance crew was able to find the patient, but he was completely unresponsive by that time, and they had to open the door. ARN had saved this patient's life. ARN’s response showed how important advice nurses are to the integrity of the Kaiser System, that they are leaders and can provide exceptional and life-sustaining care to the public in their greatest times of need.
